Stepped Shafts
Custom stepped shafts with shoulders and collars, made to your drawing. Specify the relationship between each diameter and shoulder so we can review the complete part before quoting.
- Shoulders and diameters to drawing
- Material and treatment reviewed per part
- Inspection requirements agreed before manufacture

The stepped shaft shown
The photograph shows shafts with changes in diameter and distinct collars. It is an example of the shapes we manufacture to customer drawings. Your shaft can have a different arrangement of steps and end features. We review the drawing as a complete part, including the requirements for each mating area, before confirming a manufacturing proposal.
Define each shoulder and mating diameter
Identify the diameters that meet other components and show where each shoulder sits along the shaft. Include the relevant datum, transition and edge requirements rather than relying on the photograph to communicate them. If the position of one shoulder depends on another feature, show that relationship on the drawing and identify any inspection requirement that needs particular attention.
Review material, machining and inspection together
Our shaft work includes turning and grinding, with additional operations selected for the drawing. State the material grade and condition, any treatment, and the surfaces that need inspection. These choices are reviewed together. A visible collar does not identify a material or tolerance, and the photograph does not establish a standard size or an interchangeable replacement for an existing shaft.
Send a drawing for a stepped shaft quotation
Send your current drawing revision with the quantity and required date. Mark any dimensions that remain undecided so engineering can raise questions before quotation. Use the shaft drawing checklist and RFQ checklist to prepare the details, browse our precision shaft range, or request a quote.
Key facts
- Mating diameters
- Sizes, fit requirements and reference datum to your drawing
- Shoulder positions
- Distances and relationships between steps to your drawing
- Transitions and ends
- Radii, reliefs, chamfers and end features as specified
- Material and treatment
- Buyer specification, reviewed for the complete shaft
- Inspection priorities
- Identify the dimensions and surfaces requiring documented checks
These are enquiry inputs, not dimensions of the photographed parts. Final specifications follow the reviewed customer drawing.
Questions
Can I order the pictured shaft by a model number?
The photograph is a custom manufacturing example, with no standard SKU. Send your own drawing or an existing sample with the quantities for evaluation.
What if a shoulder dimension is still undecided?
Identify the unresolved dimension and explain the mating arrangement. We can review the information and raise manufacturing questions; the final requirement must be agreed before manufacture.
