Knurled Shafts

Custom shafts with knurled sections, made to your drawing. Specify the textured area, surrounding diameters and mating requirements so the complete shaft can be reviewed before quotation.

  • Pattern and finished dimensions specified by the buyer
  • Mating requirements reviewed before quotation

Identify the knurled area

The selected photograph shows shafts with textured sections alongside smooth portions. It illustrates a feature we can discuss as part of a custom shaft enquiry. Your drawing defines where the knurl belongs and how it relates to the rest of the shaft. The pictured parts have no published standard size or model number that determines your order.

Describe the pattern and mating requirement

Specify the required pattern, textured length and position from a stated reference. Include the relevant finished dimensions and explain what mates with that area. If your specification identifies a pattern or inspection method, include it with the drawing. Appearance alone does not establish the intended fit, an assembly force, or a torque rating for the pictured knurl.

Review the smooth and textured sections together

Provide the adjacent shaft diameters, shoulders and end features as well as the knurl detail. State the material grade and condition, treatment requirements and inspection priorities. Our shaft work includes turning, grinding and knurling, with the process selected for the actual part. Material suitability and the requirements after treatment are reviewed before the final manufacturing specification is agreed.

Request a knurled shaft review

Send the drawing revision and quantity with the details of the mating part. Highlight any unresolved knurl requirement rather than choosing a value from a photograph. Use our shaft drawing checklist and RFQ checklist, compare other precision shaft examples, or request a quotation.

Key facts

Knurl pattern
Buyer-defined pattern and any referenced specification
Textured area
Length and position from your drawing reference
Finished dimensions
State the required dimensions and inspection method
Mating component
Describe the interface and supply relevant requirements

Diameters, shoulders and ends reviewed with the knurl

Knurl details are confirmed for the buyer's drawing. The photograph does not establish an assembly performance rating or a material specification.

Questions

Can I specify a spline by selecting this knurled shaft?

This example does not establish a spline specification. If your drawing calls for a spline, provide that requirement separately so engineering can assess the actual part.

What should I send if the knurl requirement is incomplete?

Send the available drawing and explain the mating arrangement. Identify the missing pattern or dimensions so they can be discussed and confirmed before manufacture.
